Watts, Isaac
(17 jul. 1674, Southampton, Hampshire, Inglaterra–25 nov. 1748, Stoke Newington, Londres).

Pastor inglés disidente, considerado el padre de la himnodia inglesa. Estudió en la Academia disidente de Stoke Newington, Londres, y posteriormente fue pastor de la capilla independiente (i.e., congregacionalista) de Mark Lane. Entre sus colecciones de poesía sacra destacan Horae Lyricae (1706), Hymns and Spiritual Songs (1707), y The Psalms of David Imitated in the Language of the New Testament (1719). Sus himnos, que suman más de 600, se hicieron conocidos a través de la cristiandad protestante; entre ellos figuran "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross "O God, Our Help in Ages Past, "Joy to the World y "Jesus Shall Reign. Hombre de gran erudición, publicó libros sobre una variedad de temas.
